Summit Overview:

As an official Ancillary meeting to the National Conference on Tobacco or Health, the 8th National LGBT Health Equity Summit (Formerly the National LGBT Tobacco Summit) is a must attend. Addressing Promising practices in LGBT Health and Tobacco control the Summit is designed to leave participants with tools and strategies to advance their movement in their local communities. There will be something for everyone at the LGBT Health Equity Summit. We look forward to seeing you in 2012 in Kansas City, MO.

WHO SHOULD COME?: You!: We’re expecting a broad group of individuals from tobacco control and health equity advocates, to LGBT seasoned and emerging leaders, community organizers, policymakers and policy advocates, researchers, students, Department of Health or other agency employees.

The Summit will be held at the Kansas City Marriott Downtown. 200 West 12th Street. Kansas City, Missouri 64105.

Registration Information:

Registration is currently open. The cost to attend the summit is $99, with onsite registration being $150. Space is limited so its important to register today. If you are experiencing financial hardship and/or unable to pay for the registration fee you can apply for a discounted/waved registration fee  by emailing lgbthealthequity@gmail.com. Please put discounted/waved summit registration in subject line. Discounted/waved registrations are not guaranteed, but the Network is working with potential sponsors to be able to assist with requests.

Waved Registration Options: If you or your program is unable to pay the registration fee, the network is offering a limited amount of waved registrations. Youth Track:

The Youth Track, designed by the Youth Planning Committee, will be for Youth and Young Adults attendees.

Youth Breakout Session#1: What is Health Equity, and why should we care

- This session will get everyone on the same page and cover topics such as the history of the movement, existing health disparities, and health equity 101.

Youth Breakout Session #2: Advocacy to Action, youth taking on the movement

- This session will help attendees to focus their knowledge and target messaging through media, marketing and how to craft a cohesive and effectual message.

Lunch-time Youth Panel: Voices of Youth and Young Adult Leaders In Our Movement

- Introduction by Gustavo Torrez and facilitated by Nicole Sutton

Youth Workshop: Where do we go from here

- Facilitated by Nicole Sutton and Frank Walker, this workshop will compile the information and knowledge from the day into an action. The focus will be on sustainability, growth and involvement.

The Network just released its general and youth scholarship applications for folks to attend the summit, Applications are due July 9th, 2012. (NOTE: forms will be automatically downloaded to your downloads folder when you click the link)

AD Showcase:

Have you created some LGBT focused Tobacco and/or Health ads over the past couple years? The Network would like to showcase them during our morning poster presentation & Ad Showcase. Please send ads by July 24th, to lgbthealthequity@gmail.com with Ad Showcase in the subject line. Please send your ads today so you have an opportunity to be showcased.

Call for Poster Presentations:

Did you miss our Abstract Deadline to present at the summit? Do you have a poster, or are you interested in creating a poster to showcase? The Network has space available to showcase additional posters at the summit. If you would like to showcase a poster email lgbthealthequity@gmail.com and we will be sure to add you to the list.
